Colaptes cafer -1
Aug.8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. occasionally heard in valley of maple creek near our camp;
but several were noted on each trip into the 3. year old burn (Aug.10,18) and the "chaparral"
covered slope E. of the lagoon. In the latter habitat they were seen perched on fence-
posts projecting but slightly above the brush-
salal-azalea canopy, and also flying up from
the ground in one open place in brush. A few
"songs" (i.e., long series of single notes) were heard
in the 3. year old burn area.
Aug.20-26 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 1 or 2 heard
or seen daily in * near our camp, in open
Douglas Fir-Tanbark oak forest. They were
also noted (1) in Harry oak woodland NW of
Schoolhouse Creek, and in mixed forest border
of balds near Coyote Peak.
Sep.3 2 1/2 mi. N Willow Creek 500 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
7:40 a.m. I collected 1 ? plumaged individual from a group
of 3 tall (Quercus kelloggii) trees at the border of
the oak-madrona forest described on p.93 (Habitat
#3). The area here is a mixture of the various
oakman trees, well-spaced with bracken, black-
berry, klamath weed, and half coffeeberry between
an open grass (stubble) and corn field of the
Patterson Ranch is immediately adjacent.
Upon opening the stomach of this bird I found
it to contain 3 large berries (sp.?) and 1 beetle larva.
The species has been heard occasionally in this vicinity for several days.
