Megaleryle aleyon
Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
Regularly seen along [illegible] Maple Creek, most commonly where bordered by riparian woodland or strewn with logs affording convenient perches but also occasionally over the open stretches & about the log pond. Toward the end of this period two were seen in extended chases above and below the tree tops, the pursuer rattling noisily all the time. Perhaps this is territorial defense (?). The young son of the Hammond Lumber Co. fire guard told us the Kingfishers had been going in & out of a hole in the dirt bank of Maple Creek a few hundred feet above the bridge (1 mi. inland from lagoon) up until about 10 days before our arrival.
