Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug. 8 (cont.) camp just off their road separated from
Creek about 3/4 mi. the upper (SE) end of the lagoon by a stand
of Alders with considerable understory.
While still on the way, we saw 3 osprey nests:
1 in dead top of a 250+ ft. redwood opposite entrance to Mary Philips Edson Group of Honor Grove of Humboldt State Redwoods Park (.5 mi. S. of Elk Creek); this one held large young & 1 adult which flew to nearby tree top; 2 other nests just S. Bear Creek S. of Pepperwood. Vaux Swifts noted at several points.
After arriving at camp, I set out 55 trap sites (with walnut meat) along edge of Alders away from the lagoon fronting on the grazed road border by a "log pond"
After supper went along road by log-filled pond for 1/2 hour, saw a few bats then (many were out at dusk)
Aug. 9 This morning from 5:15 - 6:00 A.M. checked traps.
Cought the following:
4 Peromyscus maniculatus
2 Sorex Ixowbridgi

from 7:00 - 8:30 A.M. I made a loop trip afoot thru the central portion of the grazed meadow & woodland (SEE MAP p. 72A) SE of camp. This area is traversed by Maple Creek meandering from SE to NW, which has some steep banks to 9 ft. high, & many gravel bars & bordering areas, but is mostly bordered by Alder-willow-ferry bush thickets & liberally strewn with
