Sep. 9 (2 mi NW)
Red Mtn, 5300 ft. 15 mi. S Hayford, Trinity,
Co., Calif. On the W facing slope just below the
ridge top here I gave my "Ryngny owl" call to bring
in some small birds from the Jeffrey Pine - Incense
Cedar forest below me. After a group of Chickadees
& Nuthatches had been scolding me for some
time, I heard a Ryngny owl calling farther down
the slope. I kept on whistling the slow tempo
call with only an occasional rapid tempo one,
and it finally flew closer & alighted on a side branch
of a tall dead cedar about 60 yards down the slope.
I shot at it, although I could not see the ground
below its perch because of intervening trees.
The bird went off the perch backward; but a search
of the area below it did not reveal a specimen.
