Cogswell 1949 Brachyrampus marmoratus Aug.8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Almost every morning in our camp, ½ mile up Maple Creek valley from the S.E. end of the lagoon and about 2 miles from the ocean, we heard the calls of this species given by birds in flight. This call is a high-pitched squealing whistle: "whreeeeeee-lee". During the first days of our stay, they seemed to always pass over to the north of us & also seemed to be headed toward the mountains to the NE. The last few days all those heard or seen were going in the opposite direction. The time of their passing varied from 4:45 a.m. to 5:55 a.m., the most often about 5:20-5:30 on Aug.14 or 15. Three birds were seen, one of them quite well in silhouette against the dark gray clouds. I was struck by the length of the wings in comparison to the usual impression of an alcid as seen from the side. On the 18th several having been heard early in the morning, three were also seen passing over camp & headed toward Trinidad. When about over the log pond near us & still quite high, two of them went into a suddenly increased speed and deflected their line of flight downward as if headed for the ocean directly offshore. The 3rd bird continued on at the higher level; on the 19th two were seen.
