Aug. 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Two
To 10 or more heard in tule and sedge marsh
areas at S.E. end of lagoon on each visit there.
One? (sounded like a young bird) was also heard
frequently from wet undergrowth while others
along a tiny stream near our camp. On Aug. 12th
I saw an immature along Pitler Creek ½ mile
from the lagoon; it ran up from the stream, this
at this point is without vegetation, and into the
Smilacina & other herbs on forest floor. Then it
reappeared briefly about 20 yards away, then
ducked back into the forest when I raised
my gun.
Aug. 17 One was flushed from the thin Canex & Saripes
fronting on the gravel beach at the mouth of a
small stream emptying into the lagoon about ½ mi.
n. of the n. end of the Highway bridge. It flew
cross the stream into denser marsh vegetation
which fills the small valley between beach and
highway.
