Cognwell 1949 Ortyx picta 1 Aug. 20 French Camp, 3250 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. A family of 7/8 grown young (+ adults I assume) were jumped at the border of grassy area and tall brush. The shrubs are spaced enough so that one can walk between them easily, if it were not for debris of the Douglas Fir existing here before a fire. Castanopsis chrysophylla and Lithocarpus densiflora are now dominant, with some Quercus chrysolepis. I collected 2 of the young birds (females) Aug. 24 1/2 mi N Coyote Peak, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. A covey of at least 20 birds, most of them nearly grown young, ran & flew from the road in logged off area here. Sep. 1 Three Creek Road, [illegible] mi N, 34 min West, 1/2 mi S, 34 min Willow Creek, Humboldt Co., Calif. Several seen in Tanbark - Black Oak - Douglas Fir forest near Garry oak woodland. Sep. 3 1 mi E Willow Creek, 600 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 1 ran from road along steep side of Trinity River valley near mouth of Bremer Creek. Mixed Douglas fir & broad-leaved forest nearby. Open river at foot of steep slope. Sep. 8 S. Dubabella Mtn., 5700 ft., 12 mi S Hayfork, Trinity Co., (9:40 a.m.) Calif. I stalked toward them and collected an adult which was "on watch" atop a small rock just over the ridge between shrubs. Thereupon
