Sopherly x california
Aug. 8-19 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
At least two families of about ½ grown young
were present in the bramble thickets, dry grass-
land, and border of spruce alder forest and
riparian woodland along Maple Creek near Camp.
Others were heard in the 3-year old burn area
1 mile up valley.
Aug. 28 Willow Creek, 470 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.: A cooey
of nearly grown young birds (+ adults?) was
partly flushed & partly frightened into running
behind an old barn by the Willow Creek Hotel.
The land there appears to be an abandoned
orchard, with patches of blackberry grow-
ing over jim beams.
Aug. 30 1 mi. W Willow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.: a
cooey of fully 40 birds, including several young
birds and 2+ adult males, flew a few at a time from
the boulder, moss, blackberry & fern understory
of the alder woodland in "pocket" of old river ter-
race (See journal p.99).
Aug. 31 A smaller group seen in mixed woodland.
