Fales sparveria
Aug. 19, 22 "Bald Hills", ½ to 2+ mi. NW Schoolhouse Peak,
2200 - 2600 ft. Humboldt Co. Calif. Frequently
seen in the ranches (sheep) and over some of
the Barry Oak woodland. A group of 8
and one of 5+ individuals, probably a family
group seen at one point (see journal for this date).
Aug. 24, 25 Coyote Peak, 3600 ft. Humboldt Co. Calif. - 1 ?
seen each day, over the Broken-grass "Bald"
area on the N. side of the peak and perching
in nearby forest edge trees.
Aug. 29 Willow Creek, 400 ft. Humboldt Co. Calif.
a pair (? + ♂) soared up from weedy field
& woodland border, 1½ mi. N. of the town, the ? rising
first to a height of 500+ ft. before the ♂
started up. They flapped in series of 10-15
strokes, alternated with periods of soaring —
an action much like that often seen in Accipiters.
However, I saw the falion shape well, and
the rufous tail with black subterminal band
identified the ♂ positively.
Aug. 30, 31 - 1 seen in same area.
Sep. 3/4} 2½ mi. N Willow Creek, 500 ft., Humboldt Co. Calif.
I seen at border of mowed hay & standing corn
fields — it uses fence posts for foraging
perches as well as telephone poles & trees of
the woodland border.
