Coggswell 1949 Accipiter striatus Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 8 one found dead by Dr. Pearson along my first trip line -- at border of spruce-alder forest. [This one later skimmed by Dr. Miller, = his # ? ] Aug. 18 one seen circling over our camp near the same spot as above -- 1/2 mi. from SE end of the lagoon. Aug. 23 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. one seen in camp in late a.m. It approached over the tree tops with a wave of retreating juncos in the trees in front of it. as it came into the clear- ing it dropped to just above the ground and kept at this level on into the forest & the NE. Sep. 5 Trinity River canyon near Del Soma, 1200 ft., Trinity Co., Calif. - one seen flying over pine- black oak woodland in small flat in another much deeper canyon. Sep. 10 (2 1/2 mi. NNW) Red Mtn. 5300 ft., 14 mi. S Keyfork, Trinity Co. Calif. - one, in immature plumage, observed closely but briefly about 11:30 a.m. as it dashed thru the trees bordering the spring by our camp to chase small birds I had squeaked up (see Journal). It perched about 20 yards from me; but as I changed loads in my gun, it flew closer yet just for an instant - then glided off down canyon beneath the tree canopy before I could shoot it.
