Trinity River,
Aug. 28 7/3 mi. N Yellow Creek, 400 ft., Humboldt Co. Calif.
a flock of 14 G-plumaged individuals was resting
on rocks at the upper end of an area of rapids
in the river here as I approached about 1:45 p.m.
They pushed off into the calmer water just
upstream from their perches; and toward me, as
I came up along the bank near them. Then,
they swam out toward mid stream, turned
& took flight headed downstream &
around 2 bends of the river & out of sight.
All of these appeared to be in typical full
breeding plumage of the G; no call notes were
heard.
[These birds not at this place in a.m. of 29th.]
Aug. 30 at least 18 G-plumaged birds seen in this
vicinity this a.m. at 8:45 there were G swim-
mng & diving in the shallow, relatively turbulent
water over rocky bed just N. of the suspension
bridge. They flew & joined 3 or 4 others along
the W side of the stream just to the N. I shot
at 1 of these which was up on a rock at the water's
edge; wounded it, but it swam rapidly out
into the stream & dived before I could get to
it. I searched stream & banks for 1/2 hr. without
finding it. The others flew downstream (N),
and a few minutes later I counted 17 flying
from that portion of the river.
