Sep. 11 (cont) Red Mtn. to Beegum - Red Bluff, Trinity, Shasta,
Tehama Co., Calif. broad belt were
Rhys diversifolia, Rhys trilobata, aretostaphylos
manganita? (especially common on low river
terraces near Red Bluff).
The truck being disabled by 2 flat tires about
8 mi. out of Beegum along Dry Creek valley, Yulkin,
so I waited with it while Dr Leopold & Murray
went on to Red Bluff - had then repaired. although
the area in which we thereby spent about 4 1/2 hrs.

is outside of the transect, the following list of
birds which I saw or heard incidental to
my writing of notes may be of some interest:
Turkey Vultures - several (6+)
Red-tailed Hawk - 1
Sparrow Hawk - 1
Mourning Dove - several
Red-shafted Slicker - 2
(1 eating berries of R. diversifolia)
Lewis Woodpecker - 3+
Acorn Woodpecker - several
Nuttall's woodpecker - 1
Say's Phoebe - 1
(around open field in valley)
Scrub Jay - several
Plain Titmouse - "
White-breasted Nuthatch - 2+
Bewick's Wren - 1
House Finch - several
Green-backed Goldfinch - "
Brown Towhee - 2
also noted near Harrisson
Hulch Ranger Sta:
California Thrasher - 2
and near Red Bluff :
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1
Spark Sparrow - many
Raven - 2
(flew over 6 mi. S of town)
