Cogswell 1949 Journal 115 Red Mtn, 5300 ft. 14 mi S Hayford, Trinity Co., Calif. Sep. 6 (wt.) near the crest. I collected 1 Eutamias zonurus, 1 Sitta carolinensis, 1 Junco oregonus, and 1 Certhia familiaris (see respective species accounts). Many Sceloporus sp ran from the road & nearly open rocky species. I shot one, but it was too badly mangled to preserve. It appeared to be S. graciosus. Deer sign was abundant in the road & brush areas, less so in the forest. For list of birds & mammals seen, see table on p. 123A. Sep. 7 at about 1 a.m. I was awakened by a soft chattering sound & looked up to see some animal zooming up to the top of a small cedar tree near by head. The angle of view was such that I could hardly tell what it was, but almost immediately it came down again on spread wings & alighted on a short branch of another cedar not over 2 ft from the ground. From the view of its silhouette as it glided in bright moonlight over my head I judged it to be an owl of the Screesh or Saw-whet size. It remained on its perch, which was in the shadow, so I reached for my gun & shot at it from my sleeping bag about 12 feet away. I fired a .38 avp shell, but missed it -- apparently because it was too dark for me to aim properly.
