Sep. 3 (cont.), Black-headed Grosbeak - 1; Lazuli Bunting - 1; Purple Finch - 2; House Finch - 1; American Goldfinch - 1; Green-backed Goldfinch - 2 (flying over); Spotted Towhee - 10+; White- crowned Sparrow - 2. South along After the above stop we drove down the road E. of the Trinity River continuing on a dirt road which parallels the river past the mouth of Bremer Creek (SE. of town of Willow Creek). The country is much the same as toward our camp on Coon Creek. Saw 1 Mountain Quail, and heard 1 Tolmie Warbler singing! Branner Mtn. - 3700 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Bullion, I drove here in the Chevrolet from Willow Creek to spend the night in the open pine forest we visited 2 days ago. Left Willow Creek at 3:30 and arrived on the summit at 4:10, with 1 stop of about 5 minutes enroute. The road distance is 8.8 miles, the first 5.5+ (three creeks Road) well travelled, the rest (on Branner Mtn Road) narrow & bumpy & rocky in spots. Saw 15+ Band-tailed Pigeons and 1 Coyote along the road on the way up. We set out traps - I placed 3 Schuylers & 3 rat traps for chipmunks & Wood Rats & put 10 mouse traps on the south slope just below the summit (3900+ ft.) and 20 at the 3700-3600 ft. level near where we are sleeping. Owling at dusk yielded 2 Pygmy Owls heard.
