3 mi. N Yellow Creek, 700 ft., Humboldt b., Calif.
Sep. 1 (cont.) forest into another world entirely.
There are many of the same shill chip.
munk-like calls coming from the bushes
[as described on p.102]
here near the peak, but we cannot get the
animal to come out -- when we go in after
it, the call ceases. Bear tracks were seen
in the dusty road. Gray squirrels were rare.
I collected 1 Sciaphorus graciosus on the summit
(see species acct.) and 1 Parus gambeli on the N. fac.
my slope not far below it. Other bird species
noted in this open forest association were:
Turkey Vulture, 2+ flying over; Violet green Swallow - 5+;
Steller Jay - 2; Red-breasted Nuttall - many; Audubon's
Warbler - 1; Western Tanager - 2; Purple Finch, 2 flying
over; Pine Siskin, several; Spotted Towhee - 1.
at Camp in the evening watched Dipper (see sp acct).
Sep. 2
Spent all day in camp today. Collected 1
Brown Creeper from maple tree there. 2 Bilcolated
woodpeckers called back forth for over
20 min. at a time during different parts
of the day. Bilcolated warblers, now heard.
Dr. Leopold arrived this a.m. to take
charge of the trip and brought
extra paper, so I have spent considerably
time this p.m. getting my notes & journal
into shape.
in the evening
Did some shooting at a high-flying lark,
but thus heretofore seen, but was unsuccessful.
