3 mi. N Willow Creek, 700 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug 28 (cont.) no birds or other animals particularly associ-
ated with the scattered black oaks, so am not consider-
ing it as a different habitat. I collected 1 gray
Squirrel here and saw or heard the following birds:
Steller's Jay - 4; Chestnut backed Chickadeer 3; Creeper - 1;
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 2; Turkey Vulture - 1 over; Western
Tanager - 2.
after lunch I went with Dr. Pearson & Murray to
Willow Creek, then spent the hour from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
exploring the field and woodland area W. of the Trinity
River from the suspension bridge northward for
about ΒΌ mile. There were lots of birds, despite the
heat and its area looks like a good one. I did not
hunt in it because we have not yet obtained per-
mission.
The field is mostly Klamath weed with a few scat-
tered Redbud bushes. The only birds seen in it
were 2 Savannah Sparrows and several Empidonax
sp.? flycatchers. Some scattered Salix sp., Populus
tricho carpa, and Umbellularia californica trees
along the river became a real woodland of small
extent to the N. of the field. There are many Chamus
californicus shrubs & Rubus recurvens thickets.
Birds were abundant, many apparently feeding on
the coffeberries, blackberries, & Bay fruits. The
species and numbers seen are listed in the Table
on p. 110 A.
In or near the river itself the following
