3 mi. N. Willow Creek, 700 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug. 27 (cont.) Understory nearly absent except for spindly
Rhus diversiloba which becomes almost a
thicket in the few openings in canopy of trees.
Symphoricarpos? sp. noted in such spots toward
top of ridge. The leaf litter under the
Mallones is especially dry & crisp & makes
walking very noisy. There was very
little life evident in this habitat in
late a.m.
Vertebrate species seen or heard in this habitat
are listed in the roster which follows the journal
for our stay at the camp (#110). I collected one
Pileated woodpecker*, 1 hairy woodpecker*, 1
western tanager*, and 1 Melospiza occidentalis
(see species accounts).
I left the 26 traps out on the line laid last
night & extended it to a total of 31.
Aug. 28 The catch in these traps was:
1 Neotoma fuscipes (young)
1 Catherionomys californicus (= #75)
2 Peromyscus maniculatus
I spent most of the a.m. shinning, but walked up the
road on the S.-facing slope of Coon Cr. Canyon (going NW from
camp) as far as the point where it crosses into the Horse
Tents Creek drainage. The forest on this slope is a
mixture of Tan oak - Madrone - Douglas fir-
Black oak, except for the last species being
similar to type #2 described on p. 93. I noted
