Coggswell 1949 Journal 96 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 26 (cont). Plants different: Umbellularia californica, symphoricarpos sp, conyus rostratus, and acon circinum. This habitat was met with chiefly on the NW sides of Schoolhouse Peak and NW of the first hill NW of Wyott Peak. Reasons why the understory is different were not evident. 2. Harry Oak woodland Bordering grassy balds (capable below down on the southern facing slopes) or occasionally filling top of ridges completely between Douglas Fir forests. Described on Journal p. 77. Dominants: Quercus garryana, & occasionally Acer macrophyllum. 3 Grassland on bald tops, & always lightly grazed or with hay or other crops being grown. Under other conditions the balds are apparently covered by #4. I did not determine the dominant grass or herb species. Several significant differences in bird species present are evident as between this and the next habitat (see table, pp. 86-88), but there are areas where the two are intermediate between the two, dependent upon intensity of grazing. 4 Bracken-Herb-& Grass-land. This apparently occupied the drier, higher S-SW facing slopes & knolls originally. Dominants: Asteris afflicula, Dunier sp (these 2 often to the near exclusion of the others) and various grasses & herbs.
