French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.
Aug. 24 (cont) Before 7:15 p.m., while it was still
fairly light after sunset, a Horned Owl was
heard from camp, & soon thereafter a Pygmy
Owl also. (see species accounts)
Aug. 25
I collected a Red-breated Sapsucker (= #63)
and a Chickaree nearby (= Pearson, #
in camp this a.m.. About 10:30 Bullion & Murray
& I took the truck to investigate the road run.
nning 5. along the ridge from Coyote Peak toward
Heepa Mtn. The army topo map shows this road
connecting with one in upper Redwood Creek
valley which we hoped to reach. However, we
found a locked gate across it about 1 mi. S. of
Coyote Peak. The road is placed most of the
way in open grass & bracken or along the border
of oaks; and although only two tracks of dirt
with grass or rocks between, it is easily negoti.
able. At the gate we were, however, in a tongue
of Douglas Fir forest which extends to the top of the
ridge along a N1 NE facing slope. We looked under
the bark & in crevices of down logs for Salamanders
(see species accounts of Ensatina eschscholtzii,
Ensidis fowrei).
From 12:10 to 1:30 p.m. I walked past the locked
gate along the road, which continues thru the forest,
more oaks, & finally onto an open grassy prairie
on the ridge top. The property here was
posted by the "Stover Bros." Ranch buildings
visible on the W. side of the ridge about 21/2 mi.
