Cogswell 1949 Journal 83 French Camp, 3100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Aug. 24 (cont.) We expect to go back along the ridge S. of Coyote Peak tomorrow, so will describe the area tomorrow. We flushed 2 Lusty Bearss from the Bracken fern area near the summit of the peak & they flew around the S. end & into the timber. Bullion collected one later along the road in open oak parkland NE of Schoolhouse Peak (see his notes). I collected an Empi. dorax sp. (=# 62) from the Corylus rostrata Giricarium & Acer circinnatum shrub border of the Douglas Fir forest on the N. side of Coyote Peak. We stopped along the road & talked to Mr. Clint [on?] Phillips, who is regional state forest fire warden (exact title?) for this region, with headquarters in Crescent City. He drives the road along the Bald Hills ridge fairly frequently, so we asked a few questions of him. He thinks there are few or no Coyotes here (because eliminated by ranchers); Shunks are occasional; Bear are plentiful; Racoons abundant. He does not know, at least more than we, exactly what delimits the "Balds" along the ridges here. He told us of a spring on the N side of Coyote Peak. He also said that some of the Koopa Indians, who live on a reservation just E. of here, have been setting numerous fires in the surrounding forest land.
