Field Notes Doug Bell June 30, 1987 - cont Willapa Bay, Pacific Co., WA.. Rode out in an Everwide speed boat with a 115 hp Suzuki Outboard. Quite Fast. Pine Island is very small (< 100' x 100') at high tide. It is located about mid-bay, closest to Bay Center (as opposed to South Bend). On approaching the island a herd of Harle seals were on a sand bank - probably more than 50, with many spotted pups. Almost all the gull nests were in dry sand, but there is a small turf/wall of grass which hid a number of nesting gulls. From the eastern side I counted 162 birds, the frequencies of each gull type are on the previous page. There are probably ~ 150 gull nests. Many by chick, several GWC's (seems as if there are fewer here than on the Columbia River. Also a couple Ring-billed Gulls, possibly nesting. The Oysterman say the island had been much larger, even just 20 years ago. They also mentioned that they see one Bald Eagle around - about 4 live on the bay, and owls rest in a light tower in the bay! Also mentioned that they spray the mud flats w/ Sevin to control shrimp. Anyway, I collected 6 gulls (2 WG, 2 HY, 2 GWC) DAB 207-212. July 1, 1987 Drove out to Mukilum, WA., just past Ocean Spray Plant (first left after the plant), to go to Coast Oyster. Asked first Tim Morris (Mr. Wayne Morris' son), then he introduced me to Mr. Mike Linn. They agreed to take me out to one of the islands in Grays Harbor. Real nice folks!
