June 25, 1987 cont.
last year. Said they could get me out to the island,
but I couldn't go today as the wind was already
picking up. Tides are uncooperative this year - low tide at
the morning, when winds are lowest. Glenn told me to be
at the dock at 8:00 am tomorrow.
Forgot to mention - went to the south jetty yesterday, and at
parking lot D it looks possible to shoot out there if
need be. Saw lots of WC, CWCs & hybrids, plus tons
of cormorants on old pilings. Back to the 25th - kind of
a slow day - drove into Astoria, Or; then back and up to
Willapa Bay Natl. Wildlife Refuge. Met Tim & Judy
Atkinson again, dropped off specimens off in their freezer.
Then went up to Long Beach, met some Germans (Klemmed)
nam Hannover. Then went out to the Cape Head Lighthouse
just north of Ft. Canby State Park, WA. Very high winds.
Six WC's, 5 or CWC's ad 1 Hybrid sailed past going
north into the wind. Tried recording Swainson's Thrushes,
and almost stepped over a deer in thick brush. It
remained unconcerned.

at Clarks Harbor (WA) at 8:00 am. Todd took me
out to East Sand Island (Clatsop Co., Oregon). We
landed on eastern point about 8:54. Low tide (-1) was
at 6:47. I made 3 long trips with all my gear, had
camp set up by 10:45. Ate, took a short nap. Around
11:45 went out recording gull noises. Walked past the
