June 19, 1987 - cont.
the 2 Jan & I saw flying about so much yesterday. From 10:15-
10:45 recorded gull noises. Not bad success. Tried trapping
but didn't succeed, the one & I had go in on her eggs
got out because the trap door jammed. From about 12:15 to
15:00 drove north to Newport. Along the way stopped at
turn out just north of Sea Lion Caves, Oregon. Loads of
gulls nesting on slopes below. Also saw a couple Tufted
Puffins tooling around. Saw one good Glaucous-winged
appearing gull. At Newport I stopped in at Oregon
St. Univ. Hatfield Marine Science Center. Got a room & a
lunch for $4.00 a night. Met Don Mackenzie and his wife
Pat (Lewis & Clark College Portland). Very nice, helpful.
It was about 17:00, we went out to the dump. Asked
a fellow by the name of Russ if we could shoot there,
no problem. I dropped 2 glaucous-wing type gulls
(DAB 185, 186). The place is called the Agate Beach
Refuse Dump, just off Highway 101, about 4.5 mi. N of
the Yaquina Bay Bridge & Newport, Oregon (Lincoln Co.). After
getting the 2 birds we drove on to Yaquina Head & the
Lighthouse. Some definite Glaucous-winged Gull appearing type
visible, and lots of hybrids.
June 20, 1987
Went to the dump around 06:15. Shot 3 birds on 4 shots
day 07:00. Think I wounded one. (DAB 187-189). Towards
dusk went back to the Near Agate Beach Refuse Dump and
shot 2 birds on 4 shots (DAB 190, 191) & found one dead
gull which I must have hit this morning.
