FIELD NOTES Doug Bell June 11, 1987 - cont dark backs, white bellies, orangish bills, and a light, mobby cre. They also had what appeared to be white ear & crown plumage. Tufted Puffins were visible standing in front of their burrows and as the dim of darkness grew ever more puffin appeared at their burrows. It also looked as if some gulls were purposefully waiting at the entrance to burrows. I first counted 23 mobile puffins, but that increased to 49 by the time I left that spot. Went out to the point. Calm water, but every so often a large wave came crashing in. Oyster catchers & pigeon guillemots on the rocks. A number of gulls resting out there were surprised by my appearance. Saw one definite sub-adult Glaucous-winged and one adult Glaucous-winged. It seems as if there are fewer Glaucous-winged Gulls this year at Crescent City than in the past 2 years. Almost got cut off at the point by the tide. There was a bird calling in the thick grass/swampy areas of the bluffs - it began each wade with a ko-chink ---- . Marsh Wren? June 12, 1987. Was out at the Crescent City Dumps at 11:30 to shoot gulls. Shot 5 on 5 shots (DAB 165-169) around 11:45 - 12:15. Prepared all 5 by 16:45. Getting better at it. In the afternoon an adult Cooper's paid a visit. I was engulfed in a gull when I heard a scream. Looked up to see a Cooper's connecting with a starling. The coopers quickly made off with
