Field Notes Doug Bell LOCATION: Alcatraz Island, S.F. Co., Calif. DATE: 2 June 1987 TIME: 9:50 Tide: Low (incoming?) Rock [illegible] 1.2m exposed. WEATHER: Calm, sunny. Hot. At blind on eastern with Julia Smith. Chicks of up to 2 weeks of age seen at nests on territory 2, 5, 19, 28 The amount of long calling is incredible; the general level of movement and activity is very high.. The randy & gull with silver/yellow band combination is moving about territory 29. 10:05 - Colony, 33 gulls on perimeter, 8 on platform. 10:12 - Pair 19 - & shading chicks, & not on territory. 10:13 - The yellow/silver & is hanging out by nest 30 - & then threatened with bill. & from 26 chased him, but he is still on territory 30. Copulation on I# roof 10:35 - Pair 33, & banded, & & banded - silver, left leg. & on eggs/chicks. 10:37 - Randy & tried getting in & 30. 10:40 - & from 31 attacked randy &, who stood his ground, both did aggressive upright. 10:47 - Nest exchange of pair 33, & for &. - & now on nest. 36 gulls on perimeter; 9 on platform. Between roughly 11:15 and 13:30 we trapped a pair of & gulls off their 3-egg nest (p#s 148, 149). 14:13 Colony watching. Wind has picked up - strong. Most gulls shading, hooling young.
