DATE: May 27, 1987
Spent the night in Arcata, Calif (May 26). Stopped in at
Ron Chaney
Director
HSU Marine Lab
677-3671
the HSU Marine lab in Trinidad. Talked to the
equipment technicians: Lee Rusconi and Dave Hoskins.
They gave me a list of possible fishermen who could
take me out:
Jim Gullett 677-3484 * We went out with him 30.00
Mike Clasby 677-0140
Mitch Farro 677-0618
Dr. Gary Brasca
422-0836
Other possibilities: Thur Bob's Boat Basin (677-3625) ->
Mrs Cox gave me the names of her husband Dwane Cox
(677-3807) and Dan Cox (677-3288). She said Dwane would agree to take me out.
I arranged to meet & Jim Gullett at 3:30 pm - and
he took us out in The Wildflower (32') to some of
the rocks north of Trinidad Head. One rock
we stopped at was about 1/2 mi. north of the Head - it
is a large, flat-topped, domed rock. Tim called it Bird
rock. Lots of Murres, a few Puffins. I shot 8
dolphins while we were next to the ocean side of the island.

Wind was 10-20 knots, sunny. We were back in
to shore by 4:40 pm. Prepared the birds at the Marine Lab.
Came back to the Pier at Trinidad Harbor by 20:00.
Saw 8 River Otters in harbor - watched them up close as
they played on the docks. Picked up fish scraps off bottom -
brought these up. Gulls knew what to expect and
hung out on the docks waiting for scraps. Gull
nests in harbor: 2 on large shore cliff, one each on
rocks just east of pier (as always). Tried to record gulls.
