FIELD NOTES Doug Bell DATE: MAY 26, 1987 LOCATION: Eel River near Holmes, Humboldt Co., Calif. Stopped at the large river cliffs around 16:20 hrs. After looking over the cliff faces for a couple minutes with the scope I saw what looked like a falcon sitting on a snag located behind a "clump" of trees about mid-way up the left major cliff face. There are actually 2 sets of trees growing right out of the [illegible] right hand cliffs, and the bird was sitting in the right hand set of trees. There is a large grassy slope behind these trees. After 5 minutes or so we heard wailing - of the "eyras" type. We then saw one peregrine fly up to a large dead tree. This bird was an adult, the other one couldn't be seen all that well. The wailing of an eyras (?) was heard irregularly, and some - times it definitely sounded like 2 birds were screaming. The adult flew about the rocks - more screaming was heard. A second adult showed up and appeared at various points along the cliff. Each time one adult flew, wailing of an eyras could be heard. This went on for about 1/2 hour until both adults disappeared - hunting. It was hard to see any eyras because we just couldn't find the expert ledge-site - it was too shrouded in trees plus it was quite windy on the Eel River, and variable clouds passed over - making for changeable lighting conditions. One bird sat on the snag at the tree clump the whole time - it was an advanced eyras.
