FIELD NOTES
Doug Bell
DATE: MAY 21, 1987
Birds were collected at the northern unit of Van Damme State
Park. This is the peninsula just south of Mendocino town.
Saw other birds, but the 2 I shot looked a bit like a
mated pair - they had a nest on a small offshore rock.
The male had even raised some gull chicks around. Other
birds seen - Hairy Woodpecker, Marsh Hawks, Ospreys,
Barn Swallows.

Tried trapping at Van Damme beach to no avail.
Gulls too wary & too many people! Gave up. Went to
northern Van Damme unit - prepared the 2 birds I shot
last night. Decided to talk to the ranchowner of the
land inbetween the 2 State Park Units to see if I
couldn't shoot gulls on their property. Met a wonderfully
sweet gray-haired lady, Clora Spring, and her charge, an
old woman confined to a wheel chair. They said it'd
be OK to shoot if their son agreed, which they did. So
I made plans to go back to their west cliffs this
afternoon. I drove out there, right to the cliff-edge
and was able to shoot 4 gulls in quick succession
[DAB 129-132]. Recorded gull calls at Van Damme Point.

Went back to the Spring property in the morning and
shot 3 more gulls (actually 4 - but I lost one in the
sea). Met Alan Spring - probably mid 40's - very nice
fellow!
