Field Notes Doug Bell LOCATION: Sulphur Springs Mountain, Solano Co., Calif. DATE: 2 May 1987 - cont. looked dilapidated, but there seemed to be much fresh white down around it. At this point I saw a pair of Golden Eagles soaring way off to the east - near the Quarry. It was getting darker, and Maren had just made it up to where I was. I was trying to see if I could see what looked like a ½-grown eaglet in the nest. But then I saw first a tiny white wing and then a head of a 2 week old eaglet peer around the creek. Soon thereafter, and in failing light, an adult eagle flew past us out in the valley and then up towards the cliffs. It landed on the nest. The chick poked its head out, but the eagle remained hunched on the edge of the nest, watching us. After about 3 min we decided to leave the bird in peace - we crawled away through the brush. A last look revealed no bird. It may have moved onto the nest to warm brood the young as it was late and the chick was probably calling.
