LOCATION: Alcatraz I, SF Bay, CA.

TIME: 12:13-12:45
Weather-sun, but fog at gale.
moderate-high wind.
is getting stronger. 12:21: watching pair 10 - both
sitting on nest territory (no eggs). (Pair 31 count feed-
small fish I about 5 fish + 3" long) (population on IB
at 12:41 and 12:43) 12:47 Count feed on IB -
looked like purplish mass - possibly a baby pigeon or some
sort of muscle, with purple part being a shell?
Gull nest survey: Cistern only:
Scrapers: 13 Nest: 28
Nests on perimeters of cistern: 9 (mostly in metal leaf).
One nest on cistern with 2 eggs - in territory 6, next to
cement platform.
Other kinds seen: few Western Grebes (last week there
were still over 100 on the west side. 5 Starlings.
Night Herons, see White-crowned Sparrows. Western
Kingbird, Imm. Sharp-shinned Hawk - this bird
hung around the island for considerable time - soaring
+ flitting about with the gulls - also seemed to be
actively stooping on small birds. Many dives from
a good height (100').
