Jan. 1. Boulder Creek Heavy frost; ground frozen. No water until 11 a.m. Took walk from 11:30-2:30.
Clear, warm sunshine. Many purple finches,
bluebirds, chickadees. A few juncos, golden-
crowned sparrows, R-c. Knights, Song Sparrows.
Calif. jays. Two song sparrows seemed to be
courting. Male sang alto voice and followed
female when she flew. One Black Phoebe, one Yellow-hooded.
Cold again at night.
Jan. 2. No water until 11 a.m., though all pipes were
drained last night. Pipe over river runs and must
have frozen enough to stop flow. Sunny but not
so clear as yesterday. Large flock of bush tits near
house. Drove home in afternoon. Increasingly
cloudy.
Jan. 3. Rain - Trails empty; hopper each day - Warmer.
Clears up afternoon.
Jan. 4. Went to San Francisco. Noticed an increase in number
of Glanceous-ornages and Western Gulls.
Jan. 8. Walked up to top of ridge between Strawberry
and Claremont Campuses. Frost and ice in shaded coves.
Fog over Loins and bay. Lay down on the dry grassy in
sunshine and kept perfectly warm. Birds very few
on the higher hills - occasionally a Ruby-crowned Knight-
Baird and one flock of golden-or. Sparrows, one or goldfinches;
saw one robin and heard a Greatcatelher. Saw also two
Red-tailed Hawks. Hills are just turning green as there
has been very little rain.
