At 10 a.m. Golden-crowned Keiglets were heard near house. Chilly. Insurance check rec'd. Oct. 15. Flickers came into porch at N.E. corner of house several times; one also alighted on the upper pane of a kitchen window. There were three together- one lighter gray on backs and two red snowpatches.. Went to the pool for water. A Fox Sparrow came to the table. Have placed a seed cup on the table to prevent the greed from devouring all the seeds in two minutes. Oct. At 6:30 p.m. a fox sparrow was calling ex- citedly in the top of an oak tree under which I was standing. By looking up through the tree I could see the outline of the bird against the sky. It moved about rapidly within a small radius, calling rapidly. After two or three minutes it settled on a small cross twig, suddenly grew silent, evi- dently settled for the night. I could not see the exact attitude. It was in the densest part of the foliage (all the leaves are badly eaten by the cut worms) and fully twenty feet from the ground.
