Later in the morning I saw twice an immature Black- throated Gray Warbler. Throat light, white line above eye, white outer tail feather - 83° at noon. Aug. 27. Cool. Several Townsend Warblers were seen at different times during the day. At 5:45 p.m. a heavy black fog made it quite dark. I noticed birds at the pool so stopped to watch them: Bushtits, 3 Townsend Warblers, a Russell's-backed Thrush, a Yellow Warbler, W. Flycatcher. A moment later two titmice and a slender-billed Nut-hatch came to the table for food. Later two nuthatches were on the table at once. The first appearance of this species at the table. Aug. 28. A Warbling Vireo was in the varber E. House. Drove to Boulder Creek in the afternoon; Cloudy. Also R.R. Thysol, B.B. Wade, Aug. 29. Cloudy all day. Heard Tanagers calling, lunch at Santa Cruz. Brown Pelicans, many Cormorants, gulls and a few ducks. Aug. 30. Drove over the Skyline Blvd. to San Francisco - a wonderful road. Cloudy. Two hrs. & 10 min. from Boulder Creek to S.F. Saw a few Swallows (Cliff.) Not far south of San Francisco, on a hillside that sloped down to the E. from the road, in dry grass where a few cattle were grazing I saw a Roadrunner - not 30 ft. from the highway. It was walking about in characteristic nervous attitude. Many hunters seen. Buck are said to be plen- tiful and easy to get as they have to come lower down for water.
