"Perhaps they deserved it for we would never have seen the bear. They smelled him at least half a mile off and turned sharp. I thought to myself, "It is a real b!le!" But in a few minutes a magnificent big male jumped up from behind a small hummock of ice. As we galloped toward him the team side by side my black dog became entangled among unearthing wal's dogs. He tried to drag all but could not do it; so I crawled out on the front of my sledge and cut his trace. Away he went and was soon cutting at the bear's heels. After a great deal of trouble I succeeded in turning my sledge bottom up thus anchoring the dogs. The old lie came and then ran to mine telling me to get on and we would escape alive!
