"Franklin went up Wellington Channel to 77° (1845) Assistance and Pioneer also reached 77° eight years later. (1853) In crossing Melville Island Parry saw five eiders, ptarmigan, coal, geese, north-west golden plover, and a jaeger. In one year Parry's party obtained from Melville Island 3 north-west, 24 deer, 68 caribou, 53 geese, 59 ducks, 144 ptarmigans — weight 37 66 lbs. Large numbers of caribou on Melville Island no north-west. Seen alive on Bathurst or Cornwallis Island. Many on Melville Island + south-western part. "Prince Patrick Island was a favourite resort for animals." Medham 684 ptarmigan killed on Melville Island in 1853-54.
