- May 3 - I collected the ♀ bird nest and 4 eggs of a Townsend's fox sparrow on this morning. I found the nest a week ago today by watching the ♀ carry feathers to line the nest. The nest was placed in some drooping spruce limbs that dhung down almost on the beach. The nest was about 8 ft. up and was well concealed as the place was dark and damp and the nest was almost over a pool of water. Dissection showed that the ♀ had laid all the eggs she was going to. Incubation had begun in 3 of the eggs. The lower part of the nest was built of moss and it was quite bulky resembling a shrike's nest in some respects. It While I was cutting this nest down I heard the "whir" of heavy wings close by and so I picked up the shot gun and looked around I soon found a ♀ Sooty Grouse sitting on a limb about 10 ft. up and I promptly 'axed' her. On the way back I found a red breasted Willet's nest in a dead spruce stub;
