Aug 21, 1962, Pt. Barrow,
The winter, about a dozen will be sacrificed upon Dave's
return for blood.
Aug 22, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska;
Started on colony the first thing setting up the different
-phases as completely as possible. New breeders were put
together; a certain number were put on date, while other
are receiving food and water ad libitum. The ones on date (12)
will be used for blood and maybe the stomach contents if fed
a certain grass. One Microtus sp. was dead in cage but
others are doing well.
We recorded the first good snowfall; none of it stuck,
but the temp. never went above 40°. The evening, comparatively,
seemed very mild but was still below 40°. Perhaps I
missed it earlier but it was dark last night starting
about 2300. I don't know when the sunrise came.
Aug 23, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska;
Started on colony early morning. Finished most of
it by noon. Routine work plus cleaning out some
breeding cages. Temp climbed above 40° for most
day. A couple of times, there was drizzles and dark
clouds are present, but nothing.
Aug 24, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska;
Finished routine work in colony early and started
straightening things around the lab. Went to the
Point, or rather toward the Point. I was with Holmes
and Dee Shuley, a grad student from USC working for Dr. Moore.
