Journal August 6, Pt. Barrow; rotating lemming's cage. Two animals were set up on a specific type of grass. One was on Dupontia and the other on Petricides. These will be fed this today & tomorrow. Tomorrow, both will be sacrificed for blood and stomach contents. These stomach contents, along with others to be run on the other grasses around here, will serve as criteria for Miller to compare with animals caught this winter. By comparison, we may be able to tell what the lemmings are eating this winter. Sullivan came back today from Wainwright. He set out lines I, II, IX & X. This is the start of the third running. A very dense fog rolled in this afternoon blocking the big planes from coming down. It cleared later in the afternoon, some clock over Thucker this evening. It rained for a few minutes about 2100 and then cleared abruptly into a windless, high cloudless night. Aug 7. Aug. 7 Pt. Barrow, Alaska; Started on colony in the morning. Starting the work for Piper. Interrupted by Dave who wanted to sacrifice some lemmings for their blood and particularly some who had been fed the special grasses. We started processing the blood when Ted Humphrey came to tell Dave the Peters Lake flight was ready. Dave had decided to go with Holmes and Rick Ashley, Dr. Bohnsack's assistant. Dave made them wait while we finished the blood processing. Finished the colony that afternoon. Very overcast night with fog settling in.
