Journal August 4, Pt. Barrow; Rain came intermittently, but still a pleasant day. Hines left for Pitt Point with Rex Pieper this morning. Gleason will return with the pilot. Helped Muller with the blood processing. Didn't start on the colony until after dinner. Worked on it until nearly midnight. Dave helped some for an hour or I would have been longer. August 5, Pt. Barrow; Didn't start in colony until after 1300. Spent entire day there trying to do so many extra things. Three litters had to be pulled and put in separate days, but only half a litter to a cage. Two of these litters will be used for an experiment for Schultz. I got a barrel of sawdust yesterday so while all animals were weighed, all the cages were changed. Dave wants to do blood sampling tomorrow morning. August 6, Pt. Barrow; Changed all thermographs; checked for water bottle failures, did the work on the temperature fluctuations in animals and worked out a procedure for colony work today before Dave arrived. He decided not to go blood sampling, too many other things to do. We divided two litters into equal (or nearly so equal as possible) weights, four to a deep cage. Dave one half of the litter fertilized grass from Pieper's fertilization plot and the other half unfertilized grass from the control plot. This was done to two litters and both put in the small wagon. Two more acceptable females replaced the two in the
