Journal July 16 (Cont') For nesting material. I also checked lines XI + XII for dampness. Except for a few spots of wetness and one plush on other parts, the lines are okay to run, in fact, this is probably as dry as it is going to be. On the return trip, I saw 2 ducks in the ocean I didn't recognize. I described them to Dick and he went with me to take a look, but they were only Steller's Ducks. I finished the work in the colony before dinner. After dinner, Sullivan & I brought in the four lines of traps in time to make the seminar Given by Hal Beeton on the properties and experiments he has performed on ice. Very interesting. July 17 Pt. Barrow, Alaska; Very warm day, had to open door & windows in colony as soon as I arrived in the morning. Worked on the routine stuff until lunch. After lunch, went with Sullivan to put out lines III A,B + IV A,B. Quite a few insects were in the air. I got a pregnant female alive at IV and took it back to the colony. Stayed warm all night. The duck hunters have started at the "duck camp." July 18 Pt. Barrow, Alaska; Another warm morning and the door was left open. I moved six lamnings to the "back porch" of aerology for an experiment: this experiment is to see if the lamnings will increase in weight if they are put
