July 1, 1962, Pt. Barrow;
Started on colony at 10:30 A.M. working out until 14:30.
John Hines checked the trap lines (VII & VIII) this morning without finding
a kill. Strained fairly hard this morning and was cold & slightly
foggy until 15:00, the sun came out at this time, turned
cold again and lazy. I picked through an insect sample for
Holmes. After dinner #ines & I picked up the traps with
out any kills recorded.
July 2, 1962, Pt. Barrow;
Worked on lemming colony until 14:00. Holmes &
[illegible] went to [illegible] last night returning about
16:00 this afternoon. I put up a lemming study skin
and John Hines & I processed six remaining female
lemmings. John found one female with eight implanted
embryos on one side of the uterine horn. About 20:00,
Hines and I went to trap lines XIII & XIV to set
the traps. Had no trouble in finding them. There was
some bird activity. Got back about 21:30. It
was a dreary day with a cold breeze and intermittent
drizzles.
July 3, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska;
Checked traps at 08:30 on lines XIII & XIV after
leaving Hines at Pitka's plot to census. Nothing was
caught at the lines. After returning, Holmes took the weed out
for observation on the Curlew Sandpiper and planned to pick up
John on the way back. I worked on the colony until
