Journal June 29 (cont) Mullen & Pitelka. Went to work on colony about 1030. Worked on the colony until 1700. This included chasing after 2 barrels of sawdust. Also weighed the breeding pairs today. No abrupt charges yet, of course, but one did die when he (6) locked his upper incisors into the wire mesh and couldn't release. He was replaced immediately. Checked traps after dinner with Hines; no kills, very uneventful trip to lines IV & B. Attended a seminar on "Current Developments in Bird Orientation," given by Dr. Klaus Schmidt-Koenig. Had very good points. Returned to lab to process the two animals caught. One had what looked like placental scars, but Mullen does not think so. It has a closed pelvis. Mullen will check further. June 30, Pt. Barrow; Started on Lemming colony the first thing this morning and worked at it until noon during routine work. Hines checked the trap lines. After lunch, Mullen attempted to take urine samples but we weren't able to nab the animal and procure a sample at the same time without the animal losing all its urine first. I observed Mullen's work in counting reticulocytes and staining procedure beforehand. Pitelka left today with having the chance of feeling this warm day with the warm breezes and hot sun. The temp. at one time, near noon, was 64°F. Hines & Holmes both encountered mosquitoes at Beech Ridge & Vohlschlag Slough.
