Journal June 25 (cont') 8. Mullen brought down some curtains (white) for all 3 windows which were hung immediately due to the fact that other buildings around the colony had been moved which would allow too much light and, consequently, heat. Hines checked trap lines V, VI, VII and VIII tonight. June 26. St. Barrow, Alaska. Sullivan arrived at 0300 from Weinwright. Returned with 35 kills, about half-collared lemming. After I started working on colony, Mullen came to take blood samples on 5 wounded lemmings, all, save me, from the same cage. I then helped Mullen to process part of this blood by washing glassware in his cats until 1430. I worked on colony until dinner. After a happy hour at Mullen's, went with Holmes to the NW end of Upper Meadow Lake to try to record song of Sandling. Recording was a success; recorded the flight song of the Sandling. Snow flurries were falling from 2300 on into the next morning. No crow or quond, though. Turned on heater in lemming colony when I returned with Holmes. June 27. St. Barrow, Alaska; Worked on lemming colony all day finishing setting up breeding cages (4). Accomplished by removing males and females of approximate same weight from individual cages and mating them. The females were all open. Also put brown wrapping paper inside of breeding cage to add darkness. After dinner, I worked on the colony some more doing routine work. One
