Journal June 22, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska; Clear day, wind still blowing in from S.W. Temp. in low forties. Checked kill traps on line IX + X with Sullivan. Nothing caught. Very little bird activity. Water draining from tundras into lakes had stopped. Tundra wet and sloppy in most of the area. Started to work on the lemming colony about 1030 and finished about 1530. Sullivan & Hino had already for Wainwright to set the trap lines. Sullivan will stay for the 3 days and Hino will return with the plane. In lemming colony, in over 50% of individual animals, there was a dropoff of food intake of at least 2 grams, usually more. What is strange is that most of these were building up a larger & large intake. Might be a feeding off time, or perhaps environment. Checked trap line IX + X at 2100-2200. Got 3 Lemmings, 2 on IX and one on X. Saw a flock of at least 64 pectoral Sandpipers on the road and adjacent hillside. (See species accounts) June 23, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska; Clear day, temp in low forties, wind slight. Checked Trap line IX and X after leaving Pitka at his plot. No kills. Checked 2 Longspurs & 1 area Bunting nest for Broder. Still eggs. Went with Muller about 0900 to collect blood samples. Found some nests of birds (see species account) but only 2 lemmings. One was running across the tundra obviously started by the prey. Went into a burrow. Started to use the shovel to dig the lemming out, but only the first plunge was enough
