Journal and surrounding areas for observation due to a fog and high winds which started about 1530. Maher is setting up experiments on Snowgeese & Bunting. June 21, 1962, Pt. Barrow Alaska; Couldn't start data on feeding and water use by lemmings in colony because data sheets are missing. Mullen probably borrowed them for study. Cleaned up a few others in the big cages. Last night about 1900, I gathered dry grass from the tundra by using a rake on the cutting performed by the lemming themselves. Filled the big cages after removing other grass and distributed some to the other animals. Weather still slightly overcast and wind blowing but not as hard as yesterday. A little warmer. Worked in colony for rest of day finishing the routine work and making water bottle tubes with a less bend for the larger cages. This, plus the new tubes are a greater diameter, should allow more water. Also added an extra water bottle to each cage. By afternoon temp cooled off like yesterday into low forties. Left at 2100 to check kill traps at 1545. I started checking while Sullivan went on to check his line traps on his plot. Nothing was caught on any lines. One trap was missing at 9.8 on line 3. Checked a Snowgeese nest for Maher. Still only six eggs, no nesting. We were back at 2140. A fog is coming in. Probably won't reach ARL yet but has reached POW.
