Clangula hyemalis
11 June 1962 at western end of fresh water lake, Pt. Barrow, Alaska,
1♂ seen. Did not fight easily. When something was thrown close
to it, flew a hundred yards low across the water, landing again
(cf.3)
in the water a few minutes later; without further harassment,
flew away south.
On body of water just south of airport were about 8.
June 12
about 6 seen on central marsh.
June 14
at eastern end of small body of water, 4 mi E of ARL, Pt. Barrow.
a pair seen landing in the water.
June 15
At southern end of fresh water lake, Pt. Barrow; 2♀ seen swimming
On body of water just west of above mentioned 8; a pair seen. ♂
displayed once with the cocking back of the head.
June 16
North area, Pt. Barrow; On a small body of water just 5W
of receiver site were four individuals; for certain there were 2♂ 2♀.
June 26
NW corner Upper Meadow Lake, Pt. Barrow; a pair were displaying
leg diving into the water and then shooting upward. A third tried
to luff in 3 times but was chased away each time.
July 7
Vollschlag Slough, Pt. Barrow, Alaska; a male and
female observed in water. Mullen took 2 shots
at the drake but missed.
July 9, 1962, Southern end of Lake Starevick, Barrow; a flock
of terns in the water set off from the other birds.
July 14, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska; Large flock of about 150-200
Drakes 4 days in water off point (in calm water)
