D. Stew 48, 1963 Journal Aug 22 Barry, Alaska Checked the traplines by dropping Keith Van Cleve and Glenn Stanley by the gasbins and proceeding to the traps. Very strong wind from the east, blowing about 35 knots. Dicked Stanley & Van Cleve up about 1700 on the way back. Worked on some notes and talked to Hank about the Snare trip and next year's work. Started to rain off and on after lunch but cleared by 1700. We had extra help in bringing in the traplines. Holland drove Rick Ashley and me to the Tertiary plot, Hank, Dave and two other "volunteers" went to the Central Marsh & Beach Ridge Area. Snare trip will be delayed until possibly tomorrow. The night was very still. Very little or no birds in central marsh. Aug 23. Barry, Alaska Helped Holland do the colony work and then worked on some notes. Gale winds blowing from the west, whip- ing large waves along the beach. Hank Childs left today. Just before dinner, Humphrey told me the Snare flight wasn't for 1900. Rick Ashley is going with me but I'm going on the first flight. The wind has calmed to a breeze. Snare River After unloading the equipment, I set one line of traps before the plane returned. Ben set up camp and then finished putting out traps. Water in Kolake in front is higher than last year, by at least 10 inches.
