17 Aug. for information: as animals die, they are replaced
by one from the larger group of controlled diets
and the experiment goes on. This is not in accord
with Schultz' original plans but nothing else
can be done. Chalks is ready to try the behavior
experiment with lemmings this afternoon. I'll
have to help Steve reset the lines after all this
Rail. Hank is excited about these behavior experiments.
He plans to follow these ideas through. Very cold & windy
on the traplines. About a third of the traps were sprung.
One lemming was found. Temperature must have been
near 28° ±. After returning about 2:20, I went
back out with Rick Tanaga & Steve MacLean
to act as chaperone to Beach Ridge to collect their traps.
They collected some birds and picked up 2 lemmings
from their traps. Ice covered the grass but ponds
weren't frozen due to the strong last wind.
18 Aug. Barrow, Alaska
Work started dawn west today—bringing large chunks
of ice back in from the ice pack. Holland and I
went through the colony work with ease. Hank is
doing a little photography work with the behavior
experiment. Duke shaved his beard off; looks like
a young man again! After the colony work, Holland
& I helped Hank set the live traps. Temperature
dropped as did the wind so that ponds have a thin
sheet of ice over them. I took Hank back out
