48. 1963 Journal 17 Aug. for information: as animals die, they are replaced by one from the larger group of controlled diets and the experiment goes on. This is not in accord with Schultz' original plans but nothing else can be done. Chalks is ready to try the behavior experiment with lemmings this afternoon. I'll have to help Steve reset the lines after all this Rail. Hank is excited about these behavior experiments. He plans to follow these ideas through. Very cold & windy on the traplines. About a third of the traps were sprung. One lemming was found. Temperature must have been near 28° ±. After returning about 2:20, I went back out with Rick Tanaga & Steve MacLean to act as chaperone to Beach Ridge to collect their traps. They collected some birds and picked up 2 lemmings from their traps. Ice covered the grass but ponds weren't frozen due to the strong last wind. 18 Aug. Barrow, Alaska Work started dawn west today—bringing large chunks of ice back in from the ice pack. Holland and I went through the colony work with ease. Hank is doing a little photography work with the behavior experiment. Duke shaved his beard off; looks like a young man again! After the colony work, Holland & I helped Hank set the live traps. Temperature dropped as did the wind so that ponds have a thin sheet of ice over them. I took Hank back out
