44. 1913 Journal 15 Aug experiment with lemmings and the sounds they make when coming in contact with each other. He plans to record all sounds emitted by different pairs or groups when placed in a trap, plus observing all comments. 16 Aug. Barrow, Alaska Wind blowing in from N.W., very cold, temp. around 33°F. Holland & I hurried through the colony work. All animals doing fine. About to run out of control diet but expect a shipment tomorrow or the following day. Traps III A,B & IV A,B go out today. Some snow fell lightly but didn't stick. Temperature started climbing toward late afternoon & evening. After the metabolic cages were finished, Logsdon & I set out the traps. Lives III A,B appear a little more wet than usual. A flock of Loaggers are in the area will enhance trapping. Lives IV A,B are about the same, perhaps their if anything. Logsdon threw a track on the return trip and we took a one-bounce off the little freeway to the side. Home Runt. Evening weather is becoming very pleasant while mornings are cold. 17 Aug. Barrow, Alaska At 0715 snow was falling leaving large patches for a few hours. Wind blowing hard from the east bringing rail about 1200. Holland & I finished the morning work readily and I finished a little to Pokelka before lunch. Metabolic experiments is going to be difficult to analyze
