June 14, 1962 Pt. Barrow, Alaska
Checked lemming colony at 0930. Temperature okay.
Started helping on date of dead lemmings but at 0930, went
with mullen to collect blood samples from lemmings. Found
three in the morning and eight in the afternoon. Worked
on animal colony in the afternoon and evening.
Temperature was in the forties in the field, windy in the morning,
more in the afternoon. Very little snow left in the Barrow area.
Lemmings population has regressed in the crew and slowly
concentrated.
Very little activity with birds. A few flocks flew over
along with the usual longspurs, snow buntings and sandpipers.
June 15, 1962, Pt. Barrow, Alaska.
Lemming colony thinning. No deaths. Worked on colony
until after lunch. Early morning clear and temps in high forties.
Day progressively cooled off. By 1500, was sprinkling.
Most crew helped work on date of dead lemmings. Found a
few pregnant cases. Mullen took vaginal smears. In late
afternoon, I helped mullen tie copper wire to the mandible of
lemming carcasses which are to be placed by a stake at
the trap line just as the snow begins in the fall. If we
can pick up the dead carcasses through the snow, we should
find the copper wire in the scat. Will eventually finish
writing about 250. Finishing up data started on lemmings
yesterday today.
At 2100, went with Dullinen and Hines to collect
kill traps on line East and check the live traps.
